Now Showing:  Communities of Creation

It is only within the last century that the global art society has begun to take notice of highly prolific, yet previously hidden, folk craft communities.  This March, The Harrison Gallery is bringing the global communities to Spring Street in Williamstown, MA.  Opening March 1st the Communities of Creation exhibit features carvings from productive Inuit communities on the Hudson Bay in Canada, as well as Onda utilitarian pottery from Japan and Southern African beerpots.  The show will run through March 22nd.

Introducing…

American Crafts at The Harrison Gallery

At the start of every new year we take time to reflect on the months past and consider what we can offer that is new for our clients in the year to come.  Just as jewelry has been a complimentary addition to the gallery, we feel that American Crafts will have the same effect.  We hope to bring in up to eight different artisans ranging in medium from glass, to fabric arts, to more accessible and functional ceramics.  We want to offer our clients, and new friends alike, a place where they can go to find unique and beautiful gifts or simply a collectible for themselves.  Look for the introduction of American Crafts COMING IN MAY!

Award Winning New Visions Show Set for April

Works by three artists who express their connection to the natural world through photographs, etchings and ceramics will be on exhibition at the Harrison Gallery from April 5 – 30.  In 2006, the New Visions exhibition won second place in the prestigious "Best Show in a Commercial Gallery, New England" category awarded by the International Association of Art Critics. Although we will miss New York artist Tom Slaughter, Local artists Nicholas Whitman, and Jill Fishon-Kovachick will attend the show's opening reception on Saturday, April 5 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.

A Reason to Celebrate!

Here at the gallery we were reminded of the pure joy that our visitors get when first discovering one of Susan Read Cronin's whimsical bronze sculptures.  This week she introduced four new additions to the Harrison Gallery family, including: Celebrate, a rabbit with cheeks puffed - vigorously inflating a party favor, Peg Leg, a twist on Touché, Ozzie and Elliot, two little elephant playmates (below), and O' Solo Mio, another trunked friend exclaiming his song for all to hear! Come visit the gallery or check the website to meet all our new friends!

The Dazzling Floral Still Lifes of Evan Wilson…

...are now a permanent fixture here at the Harrison Gallery.  Included in both February's Still Life Show and the American Realist show closing out the year this December,  Wilson's still lifes command attention as he paints with both an essence of delicacy and intrinsic vigor in his still life work. These small, intimate oils capture floral elegance with sweeping brushwork, portraying the momentary beauty of a flower in full bloom. Using a technique made famous by John Singer Sargent, Wilson paints using "sight size" where he places the canvas beside the object, in the same light and physical scale to facilitate the realism of his rendition. " For me the floral still life offers challenges and rewards I don't get with other paintings," Wilson says.  Stop in the gallery to truly experience the magnificent beauty of these works.

With an average of 75 visitors a day, 2000 a month, and a total of 34,298 unique visits in 2007, theharrisongallery.com has become a new hot spot for contemporary art lovers that don't necessarily get the chance to walk through our doors.  We respond to 10-12 requests a day from across the country for high resolution images of art works in our collection.  Our out-of-town clients select art work from the website when they are unable to visit Williamstown for the show.  Overall, the feedback has been that the site is clear, clean, and easy to use, which supports the extended needs of our client base and new patrons to the gallery!
